Step #13: Go Ahead--Fall.

Faith is tricky and sometimes the most ambiguous of the intangibles. It's one of those words that shouldn't have a written definition but it does. It is complete trust that cannot be proven by any step of scientific method. It surrounds us: faith in religion, faith in humanity, faith in love, faith in friendship, faith in George Michael, faith in ourselves. It's dime store psychology and seemingly the answer to any problems that lie ahead: Have faith. Everything will be as it should be, if you just have faith.

How do you get it back though, when you've lost it? What happens when your faith is shaken? How do you trust yourself again? How do you trust George Michael again?

This, unfortunately, is one of those things. (what an irritating turn of phrase... one of those things).

There is no step-by-step process, no timeline, no secret ingredient to restoring faith in whatever it is that has lost you.

Finding it again is akin to a trust exercise at summer camp. It's okay to squint and clench your teeth, bracing yourself for inevitable impact and likely concussion. You can push as many people ahead of you as you want...but eventually it's your turn. No matter how many times that jerky fat kid with the head gear drops you, you have to keep crossing your arms, closing your eyes and hoping that this is the time he'll be paying attention. This is the time that Ricky won't let you fall. It's when you don't feel your head bounce against the summer grass that you know it's back. It's the moment you look up and see Ricky smiling down at you, headgear and all, that you know you're going to be okay.

Be your own Ricky. Trust completely in yourself-- Only then can you fall into the arms of the next jerky fat kid that comes along.
